About Roger Misso

Roger is running to bring a new generation of servant leadership to Congress.  He believes in Central New York and will bring our values of hard work, fairness, and accountability to Washington.

Roger was raised in Red Creek, in Wayne County. He grew up skipping stones at Ruby’s, washing dishes at The Cottage Inn, and saving enough money for annual trips to the Carrier Dome to watch Syracuse basketball. He graduated from Red Creek High School and the United States Naval Academy before serving for more than a decade in the Navy, to include combat operations as a naval aviator.

From an early age, Roger realized the importance of public service. The values he learned in Red Creek – hard work, fairness, accountability – helped him earn an excellent public school education, serve honorably in uniform in positions of great responsibility far from home, and work across to get things done.

Roger was deployed twice to the Middle East, flying on and off of aircraft carriers. He trained with the Marine Corps in Yuma, Arizona, and flew one of the first airbone missions to combat ISIS in 2014. While in uniform, Roger served as an advocate for victims of sexual assualt, a defense assistant in the US House of Representative, and chief speechwriter for the first African-American woman to hold the rank of four-star in the nation’s history.

While in the Service, Roger focused on issues that would prepare him to represent Central New York in Congress. He was a passionate advocate for defense reform and small businesses. Roger stood up to an entrenched bureaucracy and fought to get more diverse men and women promoted to major leadership positions in naval aviation. As an early advocate for the Force of the Future initiative, Roger was part of a team of reformers who advocated for better family leave, increased child care service hours, and access to mental health services for military service members.

Roger has worked extensively with entrepreneurs and veteran-owned small businesses. His top priority is to create jobs and build a strong Central New York economy that is inclusive and accessible to people from every corner of our district. Roger knows that to create jobs and build business, we need to cut red tape, lower taxes on the middle class, and create an economic environment where small business can flourish. He learned these lessons from his mother, who has owned a local tax preparation business in Central New York for more than two decades while raising three children.

Roger is a third-generation American on his father’s side. His great-grandfather immigrated from Italy and served in World War I. Roger’s grandfather, who recently passed away, was a Marine Corps veteran during the Vietnam War era. His father  served for three decades in the New York Army National Guard, and his brother also wore an Army uniform.

Roger believes that Central New York is the best place to raise a family, start a
business, and build a home. Yet for far too long, politicians have ignored regular people in our district. They have left behind hard-working folks from all walks of life. Central New Yorkers deserve better.

Roger is running to bring a new generation of servant leadership to Congress. He believes in Central New York and will bring our values of hard work, fairness, and accountability to Washington.

Roger and his family make their home in Syracuse. Roger and his wife, Christy, have a daughter, Amelia, and a son on the way, due this summer.
